Transient allergen Exposures

Sometimes it is impossible to completely avoid allergens (e.g., you may visit a friend who has cats or dogs or who smokes). You can prevent or reduce the severity of the resulting asthma attack, nasal congestion, and itchy eyes by taking a long-acting antihistamine and inhaling 4 puffs of cromolyn or nedocromil along with 2 puffs of an inhaled broncho dilator at least 15 minutes before the exposure. The medication should be continued every 4 to 6 hours while the exposure persists. To prevent the inflammation associated with the late allergic reaction that might otherwise persist for 2 or 3 weeks, the dose of inhaled steroid should be doubled for 7 to 10 days after an intense exposure. Note that using extra inhaled steroid 10 to 15 minutes before exposure will not prevent the allergic reaction because this medicine takes about 2 to 3 hours to begin working
